How the math works

Commission is charged on the full order total, menu price plus any fees the app adds on your behalf, before you pay for food, labor, or packaging. That is why a 25 percent plan can wipe out the entire margin on a delivery order that looked profitable on paper.

The comparison column is what the same orders would cost if the customer placed them on your own site. There is no commission there, only card processing, which every business pays no matter where the order comes from.

Monthly orders times average order total, times your commission rate, times twelve. The comparison line is the same sales at 2.9 percent plus 30 cents per order.

What direct ordering does not fix

The apps are not only a checkout. They are a marketplace full of hungry people who have never heard of you, and they hand you drivers on demand. Turning them off on day one usually costs more than it saves.

What works is running both. Regulars, catering, and repeat orders move to your own page where you keep the full ticket, and the apps keep doing what they are good at, which is finding you first time customers. Most of the restaurants we have built for shift somewhere between a third and a half of their delivery volume across in the first year.

You will still pay card processing, you will still need someone to handle delivery for the orders you take yourself, and you will need to give people a reason to order direct. Those are real costs. The calculator shows you the gap you have to work with.

Questions people ask

How much does DoorDash charge restaurants?

DoorDash publishes three marketplace plans at 15, 25, and 30 percent of each order, and pickup orders run around 6 percent. Most independent restaurants land on the 25 percent plan. Once promotions, refunds, and packaging are counted, the real cost of a delivery order is usually a few points higher than the plan rate.

Is it cheaper to take orders on my own website?

On a per order basis, yes, and by a wide margin. Your own page costs card processing, roughly 2.9 percent and 30 cents, against 15 to 30 percent on a marketplace. The catch is that you have to send people there yourself, and you have to solve delivery for those orders.

Will my customers actually switch?

Some will, mostly your regulars, and the switch usually needs a nudge. A QR code on the table and the receipt, a note in the bag, and a small perk for ordering direct do most of the work. Nobody moves the whole business over, and you should be suspicious of anyone who promises that.

What does an ordering system cost to build?

It depends on menu complexity, payments, and whether it ties into your kitchen or point of sale. After a free consultation you get one fixed itemized quote, so you know the number before anything starts and can set it against what the calculator showed you.

Are these commission rates accurate for my restaurant?

They are the published rates as of September 2026. Contracts vary, especially if you negotiated or signed up during a promotion, so pull a recent statement and use your real effective rate in the calculator for a number you can trust.
